If you like the dill pickle kettle chips and the Popcorn in a Pickle from Trader Joe’s, you’re in the right place. I love pickled everything (I even make my own fermented sauerkraut), but sometimes pickled product hurt my mouth. I thought maybe it was the ingredient called citric acid, so I set out to make a pain-free dill pickle powder seasoning.
I combined my memory of the Trader Joe’s dill pickle flavored popcorn with a side-by-side taste test of the dill pickle chips to create this dill pickle seasoning recipe. My friends tasted it and gave feedback, and after further modifications, I finally perfected it. I made spice jars of the seasoning for my friends for solstice so they could make their own dill pickle popcorn at home. If you want to be added to my list of friends who gets one, you better start befriending me now haha.

How To Make Dill Pickle Seasoning

Dollhouse Tip
Double or triple this recipe to make this as gifts to give people. I did this for solstice, and everyone LOVED it.
Measure the ingredients. Measure the following ingredients into a medium sized mixing bowl: 3 tablespoons (56g) pink sea salt (or any salt you have), 2 tablespoons (12g) vinegar powder, 2 tablespoons (28g) onion powder, 4 teaspoons (12g) garlic powder, 4 teaspoons (4g) dried dill, 2 teaspoons (12g) vegan or organic sugar, and 1 teaspoon dried parsley.
Whisk the ingredients. Whisk the ingredients until everything is combined evenly.
Transfer to a jar. Transfer the dill pickle seasoning to a jar that you want to store it in.
This pickle popcorn seasoning recipe makes around 10 tablespoons of spice (which is equivalent to around ⅔ of a cup). This amount of pickle seasoning can fit nicely into 2 standard sized spice jars or 1 oui jar. Oui jars are the jars that Yoplait Oui yogurt comes in. I found nice wooden lids on amazon so I could reuse the yogurt jars. Then I made little labels with my label maker so I could give this as gifts to friends and family.
Questions and Answers
Does this taste anything like the Seasoning in a Pickle seasoning blend spice from Trader Joe’s?
I’m not going to say that this is a Trader Joe’s pickle seasoning dupe, but I was inspired by it. I also took inspiration from the Popcorn in a Pickle popcorn from Trader Joe’s. Unfortunately, Trader Joe’s discontinued both of these dill pickle flavoring items, so we’re on our own. It’s like foraging in the woods for dill pickle flavor popcorn.
Can you use the dill pickle seasoning for anything besides popcorn?
Yesssss you can! I’ve had this DIY dill pickle seasoning in my spice drawer for at least a month now, and I’ve been using it on veggies, toast, and on salads. It’s great on so much more than just popcorn. You can even use it as a dry rub for tofu.
Ingredient Substitutions
- Sea Salt: I use pink sea salt because it has minerals in it, and I think it’s healthier for me. However, you can use any salt you have or like.
- Vinegar Powder: I personally wanted a pickle seasoning that had no citric acid, but if you don’t have vinegar powder any you don’t want to buy any, you can use citric acid in its place I suppose. I don’t think it will taste as good though.
- Sugar: I suggest looking for vegan or organic sugar because sometimes conventional granulated sugar is not vegan. If you avoid sugar, you can omit this ingredient or replace it with xylitol.
- Spices: I messed with this recipe a lot to get the best dill pickle seasoning recipe possible. However, you should feel free to wing it when you make yours. For instance, you might prefer a spicy dill pickle seasoning. In that case, you could add some cayenne pepper powder or black ground pepper.

I mostly cook with organic ingredients, but only specify organic when it’s necessary to ensure the item is vegan.
